Queen Visits Jamestown

by Natalia J. Garland, M.S.W.

Queen Elizabeth II visited Jamestown, Virginia, on Friday, May 4, 2007. The 81-year-old Queen celebrated the 400th anniversary of Jamestown, the first permanent village of English settlers in the New World. Her visit has been criticized, appreciated, or ignored by various news media. My view is that the Queen's visit was a good thing, and here's why.

(1) There is an enduring bond between America and Great Britain. Although we fought for independence from the rule of monarchy, we continued a relationship with the Britons through commerce and a shared culture. The English language (rather than French, Spanish, or Dutch) prevailed in America, and this ease of communication seems to have promoted both political alliance and personal curiosity between our countries. We were allies during World War II, and Great Britain has been our greatest supporter in the war against terrorism.

(2) Average Americans had an opportunity to display hospitality and to affirm unity within diversity. At the state General Assembly in Virginia, the Queen praised the positive impact of America's concept of the melting-pot. Americans of different races and backgrounds gathered at the Virginia Capitol to show goodwill. Adults and children, Virginia dignitaries, the Powhatan Indians, and the American military all greeted the Queen together.

(3) Queen Elizabeth II made history. Catching sight of her was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for most of the Americans who assembled in Virginia. Participation in the ceremonies helped to heal the wounds which the massacre at Virginia Tech inflicted on our entire country. In fact, the Queen met with some of the survivors and families of the massacre, and this consideration can only deepen our bond.

The Queen provided us with pleasant memories and sentiments, and some nice photographs as well. Whatever the internal problems that burden Great Britain's royal family, Queen Elizabeth II appeared at the right place and at the right time to give us respite from our own conflicts.
